The Challenge
To get yourself - and your bike - from Cape Point Lighthouse to Green Point Lighthouse - that's the POINT2POINT Challenge!
And if you are up for bigger challenge, once you've had a coffee in Green Point, you can get back in the saddle and ride back to Cape Point again if you'd like!
Seriously though, when I first sketched out the route, setting up the POINT2POINT Challenge for MTB was the main objective.
That's the RED route...
This route sets off from Cape Point, out the gate and on to Plateau Road direction Scarborough. From there it's a clear run to Red Hill Road, Pine Haven, onto the single track past the Lewis Gay Dam, over Black Hill, then through Sun Valley and up Ou Kaapse, onto Ou Wa Pad, down the Tokai MTB trails (the Broken Road aka ‘The Beast’ and Snakes trails), into the Green Belts, over Kirstenbosch Loop, past Rhodes Memorial, up Devil's Peak to Tafelberg Road, TM Cable Station, towards Signal Hill and then descending Lions Head to Sea Point and then along Beach Road through to Green Point.
But unfortunately riding that option was put on hold after a devastating fire left sections of Table Mountain with restricted access impacting significant portions of the MTB route until October 2021! So. while preparing for the for reopening, we came up with some POINT2POINT Challenge alternatives and the ROAD and LITE versions were born.
The POINT2POINT Challenge ROAD route - in YELLOW - is 'all tar', suitable for any type of bike, routing from Cape Point via Red Hill, Black Hill, Ou Kaapse Weg, Constantia Nek, Suikerbossie, Camps Bay to Greenpoint.
The POINT2POINT Challenge LITE route - in GREEN - is also an 'all tar' but shorter, less climbing route taking in Cape Point via Red Hill, Black Hill and then on to Noordhoek, Chapmans Peak, Hout Bay, Suikerbossie, Camps Bay on to Green Point.
To avoid any disappointment, there is no trophy or medal* ceremonies at the end of whatever Challenge you choose. Just the satisfaction of having cycled across the whole of the Cape Peninsula between two famous light houses - from Cape Point to Green Point - in one day... that's what completing the POINT2POINT Challenge is all about!
But, if you upload your result to the Wall of Fame you can choose for it to be listed on the Members Only Leaderboard (set out by Challenge, bike category and gender) Click through to the WALL of FAME to find out more.
